Augmedics – Redefining Precision in Surgical AR

Some projects demand more than just design expertise—they require a deep integration of technology, ergonomics, and precision engineering. Augmedics, a pioneer in augmented reality (AR) for surgical navigation, approached Nekuda to refine and optimize its next-generation headset. The goal was to maintain the device’s high-performance technology while ensuring superior comfort, stability, and heat management—all within a refined, aesthetically cohesive design.

A Delicate Balance of Form and Function

The device is composed of two distinct parts: the glasses, which serve as the AR interface, and the technological unit, which houses the system’s core functionality. This separation required careful design considerations to ensure seamless integration between optics and computing components. Maintaining aesthetics without compromising performance was a major challenge, leading to a highly iterative design process supported by advanced prototyping using 3D printing technologies.

Engineering for Stability and Surgical Accuracy

Unlike standard AR headsets, Augmedics’ device is engineered for high-precision spinal surgery, requiring unparalleled stability and accuracy. To meet these demands, we developed one of the most advanced rigid-flex structures in the industry, ensuring the device remains exceptionally stable on the surgeon’s head while allowing for precise adjustments. The lenses were designed to move seamlessly up and down, enabling surgeons to toggle between real-world and augmented views without disrupting their workflow.

Managing Heat in a High-Performance System

A key challenge in AR wearables is thermal management, especially when dealing with high-performance processing power. Given the long operating hours of spinal procedures, we had to design an effective heat dissipation system to ensure comfort without affecting surgical accuracy. The temples of the headset were engineered with a dedicated heat exhaust mechanism, allowing heat to dissipate efficiently while keeping the device lightweight and balanced.

A Game-Changer in Surgical Navigation

The Augmedics headset does more than provide AR visualization—it guides spinal surgeons with pinpoint accuracy, showing exactly where to enter and what anatomical structures lie beneath the surface. The integration of cutting-edge optics, extreme head stability, and an advanced heat management system creates a device that is not only technically groundbreaking but also intuitive and reliable in high-stakes surgical environments.

By merging aesthetics, engineering, and precision technology, this project pushes the boundaries of augmented reality in the medical field, offering a next-level surgical experience that enhances both surgeon confidence and patient outcomes.
